The OECD instructed the Portuguese Water Partnership to prepare Portuguese version of the “Principles for Water Governance”, approved by the Ministerial Council of that organization on the 4th of June.
The twelve OECD Principles of the Water Governance aims to contribute to clear public policies and results-oriented, based on three dimensions that are complementary.
· Effectiveness: concerns the governance contribution to the definition of clear objectives and targets for, sustainable water policies at all levels of government, to achieve those goals and to meet the desired goals.
. Efficiency: With regard to the governance contribution to maximizing the benefits of a sustainable water management and well-being associated with the lowest cost to society.
· Trust and Commitment: concern the governance contribution to strengthen society’s trust in the responsible institutions and to ensure the participation and commitment of stakeholders through democratic legitimation mechanisms and equity.
The water governance can significantly contribute to the design and implementation of more robust public policy, involving a shared responsibility between different levels of government, civil society, business and the wider range of stakeholders have an important role to play in order to achieve economic, social and environmental good governance of water.
The Portuguese Partnership for Water, as an entity that aims to develop synergies and maximize potential for the development of Portuguese water sector in the world, shares the principles set out by the OECD and considers that it offers consolidate partnerships between national institutions and all the nations of the world who are committed to sustainable water use and exploitation of water resources.
