Portugal and the Netherlands face similar challenges in water management, including issues such as desalination, pollution and the impacts of climate change. The Water Alliance in cooperation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Portugal, the Portuguese Water Partnership and Águas do Tejo Atlântico organized a High Level Meeting on Water Technology in Lisbon, which took place on December 3, 2024. This visit brought together water experts from both countries to discuss these challenges, explore innovative solutions and identify opportunities for collaboration.
The Program consisted of a reception and welcome speech by the Vice-Ambassador of the Netherlands, Mrs. Esra Sen, at the Embassy of the Netherlands. This was followed by presentations by participants and presentations on the EU Water Directive and the challenges of the Portuguese water sector. Participants also had the opportunity to participate in thematic sessions on water and wastewater. After a networking lunch at the Embassy, work continued at the Fábrica da Água de Alcântara.
Before a technical visit to the facilities, the group attended presentations by Águas do Tejo Atlântico and Águas de Portugal. The work day ended with a tasting of VIRA beer, produced from treated wastewater.
